Mary Greenwell and ‘The Magic of Make-Up’
This is an amazing opportunity to learn the art of make-up from one of the most renowned professionals in the beauty industry today. For the first time in her prolific career, Mary Greenwell will share her trade secrets with an intimate class of just 14 students. From creating iconic looks for Vogue magazine to achieving the everyday-gorgeous appearance of Hollywood A-listers, Mary will show you how it’s all done. Over a course of ten days, students will not only learn the founding principles of make-up, but get a taste of the artistry and creativity of this profession.
Mary’s class will suit students of all levels, whether you’re thinking about a career in make-up or just want to learn industry secrets to make yourself look fabulous. Each student will get one-on-one attention with Mary in a relaxed setting and work with products supplied by some of the best cosmetic companies.
Here’s a brief outline of what will be covered in the course:
Day One:
Mary will give an introduction to make-up and colour, and explain how they can give someone a completely different appearance. She will discuss the history of make-up and its evolution to what we know of it today. By acknowledging the background of make-up, students will gain a better understanding of how to manipulate this magical tool and express themselves creatively with it. To prove her point, Mary will personally give one lucky girl an unbelievable makeover to completely transform her before the class’ eyes.
Day Two:
Mary will share her expertise on one of the most important aspects of make-up: skin and skin care. The basics she will cover include:
Assessing skin texture, tone and colour
Methods of application
How and when to use tools like sponges, brushes and fingers
Colour
Shading and contouring
Using different types of foundation
Concealers and moisturisers
Powder
Mary will demonstrate how to create an array of finishes, from matt, natural and glowing, to the more dramatic, like wet and shimmering. She will also explain how to combine and manipulate products to create the ultimate flawless face.
Day Three & Four:
Two days of the course will be devoted to every aspect of eye make-up. Mary will show students key techniques of creating everything from the classic smoky eye, to high-fashion editorial looks. She will discuss how to effectively use sparkly and shimmery eye shadows, eyeliner and how to apply false eyelashes. With eyebrows a focal trend this season, Mary also touches on how to shape, maintain, groom and enhance this oft-forgotten asset.
Day Five:
Mary will emphasize the versatility of blush by showing students the different ways in which it can be worn. Using bronzer, powder and cream blush, Mary will teach students how to shade and contour the face and how various emphases can evoke different moods.
Day Six:
Lips will be the focus of today’s class, with Mary explaining the various results of using lip gloss, lipstick, lip liner and lip stains. Students will learn how to choose the right shades, be it a matt, satin or sheer finish, to complement the overall look they want to achieve.
Day Seven & Eight:
Having learnt an arsenal of techniques, Mary will guide students towards putting their newly learnt skills to the test. Using icons like Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot as references, students will attempt and perfect a selection of beauty’s most recognisable looks. Students will be encouraged to come up with their own references and the afternoon will be left free for creative trials. Practice does make perfect.
Day Nine:
Students will get a taste of shooting their own beauty editorial in a photographer’s studio set up for the class. Mary will assess each student’s strengths and advise them on how to combine different elements of what they’ve learnt in one look. She will also discuss how to work from inspirations and how to create an entirely new look by using what you have learnt.
Day Ten:
For the final day, all rules will be thrown out the window. Students will set their own creative trials which they can have fun with. From crafting their own runway look to taking inspiration from a film, the sky’s the limit. The class will then have a day out to lunch with Mary, the perfect atmosphere for them to ask questions and discuss what they have learnt. At the end of the course, students will receive a luxurious goody bag and test shots as proof of what they have achieved. For aspiring make-up artists, these are the first shots in your portfolio!
